I couldn’t have said it better myself
I came across this quote by fellow writer and music aficionado Nick Hornby this morning, and liked it so much I wanted to share it:
“I profoundly disagree with those who equate ‘literary’ with ’serious’ - unless ’serious’ encompasses ‘po-faced’, ‘dull’, ‘indigestible’. Anyone who does anything that seems easy or light or which actually entertains people always tends to get overlooked - apart from by the reading public, the only people who really matter. I reserve the right to write the kinds of books I feel like writing.”
WORD.
Thanks, Nick.

Oh God. DeBartolo has a blog. Why didn’t I know this? I just died of happiness.
All squeeing aside, it’s wonderful that authors still feel this way. Too often writers give a happy ending, and not the right ending. The pitiful thing is when readers feel they’re owed a happily ever after. Vicious cycle that, which is why God-Shaped Hole made me so deliriously happy (though the tears, you understand…) you’ve given the right endings. Thank you so much. As a bookseller, I greatly appreciate it. It would be no good to recommend a beautifully written book with the wrong ending.
And now this has turned into a review. Sorry about that.
